I climbed Mt Whitney

2010 August 13th I had imagined that Whitney Portal was a campground where I could see into the distance from, but it was in the forest near huge crags. It was 20km away from a town named Lone Pine at...

To travel alone

Getting off the bus at Merced ,a small town in California , I entered into the rail station house to shelter from the june sunlight. And I took off my backpack. Hopes and fears, that I felt when I came here from Sanfrancisco a week ago, quite subside, and the feeling of satisfaction and listlessness are filled instead now. I stayed at Yosemite nationalpark for a week and have left there this morning. I don’t have any special plans to do in Sanfrancisco, but I am not in time for 12:33 flight to Japan. So, I am going to stay at SF for 2 nights, and spend a day for sightseeing there. There are some visitors at the station house with high roof.   As there were no peoples at window, I went there to take a ticket. I wanted to get the next train’s ticket (13:20) ,but I couldn’t ,because it was full. I wondered how to spend for 3 hours and a half. I remembered that a simillar situation had happened before. It happened when I was traveling by bus from Yellow Stone national park to Canada 8 years ago. I was traveling alone for the first time and it was summer, too. I arrived at Bozeman, a small town far 2 hours from westyellowstone. I saw the sigh, “MOTEL” , but no houses around there. The time schedul ,that the driver wrote by his hand for me , said that changing bus would leave 1 o’clock at midnight. It is 8 o'clock now. There are some people like homeless around the bus depot. I wondered that they came here, because it was safe for them. The sign on the door said that the depot would close at 10:00 pm. The sun would set about at 9:30. The stuff of the depot said “walking to the north a little, you can get to a bar to spend the time with some coffee”. But I was still worried. So I thought to spend the time with someone who also waited for the bus, and this was no time for saying “I’m not good at english”. I found 2 men in the depot, and talked to them. A man was from Philippine, another from Belgium. They were sightseeing tourlists, and just met here. Phil seemed to be in his 30’s. He had once studied abroad at university in Massachusetts ,and worked as nurse in his country....

Visiting Yosemite 7th day (15/june/2007)

7th day(15/june)・・・Leaving Yosemite It’s fine today, too. I haven’t seen the rain during the trip. I am going to leave here by the 9:32 bus to Sanfrancisco. Here is the bus stop of Camp Curry for shuttle and Yarts. There is the Kiosk to reserve tours, and the office to check-in in the back of this picture. You just return your key at the office to check-out. 6 days went all too quickly. As waiting for the bus, I thought. I should have rented a bike to get to many places, for example, Valley View and Bridalveil Fall. I wanted to join rafting, horseback-riding, tram-tour, moonlight-tour and walk other trails. To watch the movie at visitor center, to get commemorative stamps, to take it easy and read a book all day. There is no end to desire. I should stay for 2 weeks at least. I have understood the feeling of the couple from Sanfrancisco who said they came here every year. I got on the bus. Connecting bus to Amtrak passed through the valley, and entered a ordinary road surrounded by low trees. Anyway, I have walked very much. I could walk more than I had planned. I remembered that the thing I had given up 8 years ago. It’s getting to the place higher than Mt. Fuji. I enjoyed hiking in my 30s. I used to go to mountains near my house for weekend and visited some high moutains in japan. I once dreamed to get to the top of Kilima-Njaro. As thinking a easy way, when I visited America 8 years ago, I was going to get Pikes Peak by tour bus from Dember. But it was canceled because of bad weather. After that, I had stayed away from mountains and had not much thought of them. At this trip, I knew that my power was not bad and the desire to want to be in the nature didn’t get weak. Taking my digital camera, I opened the most favorite picture among them I took in Yosemite on the screen and enlarged it. It’s the picture of a sign that stand at the head of Mist Trail near Happy Isles. When I look at the picture, I remember the trail I walked and many memories. It says “JOHN MUIR TRAIL 340 KM”. 1 month-trip for 340 km must be impossible for me. But as seeing “MOUNT WHITNEY”,Ⅰ knew that the terminal of the trail was the heighest place (4418m above sea level) among 48 states. And I thought that I would chase the dream again.

Visiting Yosemite 6th day (14/june/2007)

6th day(14/june)・・・1-day hiking to Yosemite Point Elevation gain:890m Distance:15km It’s nice day for hiking today, too. I got off the shuttle bus at Camp 4, and entered Yosemite Falls Trail. The trail was steep upslope and had many switchbacks like 4-mile Trail. After passing through a downslope on the way, I got to the place I could see Yosemite Upper Fall. Yosemite Upper Fall Water from the top of the fall change itself wider with mist, and that also change the shape like a lace by the wind. That was soft rather than manly, and was different from the fall I had imaged. I met a japanese who lives in Sanfrancisco at buffet this morning. He said that we had little rain this year. According to the guide book, there usually is a roar all over the valley from thaw to early summer. The reason why Ⅰ decided this season for my trip is that the cables for the top of Half Dome are up late May and that water of the Falls disappears in August. After a short break, I started walking. Upper Fall is 436 meters heigh、 elevation gain to the top from the floor is 850 meters、 so I am at the halfway point. A huge rockwall is rising up to the sky at the left. As seeing many fallen rocks, I thought that they might blocked the trail sometimes. The pretty flowers sticking to a rock cheered me up. And then the fall disappeared from sight. I walked the trail at rocky tract with handrail, and saw the top of fall at the terminal. Going back the trail, I got to the upper stream. There were no artificial things except for a bridge and some signs. Some people were having lunch under the bridge. I left for Yosemite Point 1.6 km far from here. Samurai? Yosemite Point is a overlook, so you can see a nice view. But I didn’t want to get near the handrail. There was a rock like cloud near here. As looking down the valley, I had lunch and took a nap under the rock. I heard the wind swaying the leaves of pine tree and birds singing. I had a moment of bliss. The upper stream of Yosemite falls After Yosemite Point, I dropped in the river 1km far up from the top of the falls. I could have the beautiful river to myself. I saw a fox running near side of the river. If I had had much time and went along the river upper, I could have seen bears....

Visiting Yosemite 5th day (13/june/2007)

5th day(13/june)・・・1-day hiking to Glacier Point and Sentinel Dome Elevation gain:1250m Distance:26km I got off shuttle bus at Yosemite Lodge, walked to the head of 4-Mile Trail for 15 minutes. The steep upslope trail with many switchbacks goes to Glacier Point. Yosemite Falls(from 4-mile trail) Sightseeing by bus yesterday shook off my tiredness. There are some overlooks on the way, you can see Yosemite Falls and Half Dome. Especialy, west view you can see Sentinel Rock and El Capitan is the best. Sentinel Rock and El Capitan It’s really U-shaped valley. There are many pretty wildflowers along the trail. Snow-plant was the most impressive for me. It growed on the soil with many dead branchs and without grass. It’s 20cm high, and the color of stem, leaves and flowers are all red. It doesn’t depend on chlorophyll and photosynthesis for food. I wonder that they don’t grow in crowds. I met them for three times, they grow alone. I didin’t know what he think. What a strange guy! They grow only in the North America? Both of a couple from England and a women from Taiwan said that they had never seen before. I got to Glacier Point. I didn’t feel a sense of achievement because I had been here yesterday by bus. If I could get to the top of Mt. Fuji by car, it would make the impression(seeing the rising sun from a sea of clouds and doing Ohachimeguri) small, I thought. There was a granite rock at the corner of the observatory. A brass plate was embeded on it which says “elevation above sea 7214 feet, 250 dollars fine for disturbing this mark 7/11/1905” I thought the price raise is not neccesary for the present. After lunch at giftshop and sightseeing, I left for Sentinel Dome 2km far from here. Sentinel Dome The view from the summit of Sentinel Dome is more spectacular than the view from Glacier Point. The summit looks like a skin-head. Without shade, but it’s not toohot because of strong wind. No road goes here. So I was grad of few people, too. I took off my clothes, lay on my back and smoked at the place where I could see Half Dome. Half Dome from here looks like women. The right side (round face) is Long hair, shaded left side (flat face) images a moderate face. After Sentinel Dome, going down the trail, I wavered at a fork....
